Chapter 21
Holden talks to Phoebe, and she is worried that their father will kill him for getting kicked out again. Phoebe is very angry with Holden for getting expelled and begins to ignore him.
Chapter 22
Phoebe points out that Holden hates everything. She challenges him to name one thing he likes. Holden responds by saying he liked Allie. Phoebe didn't take that for an answer reasoning that he was dead. Holden says "If a body catch a body comin' through the rye". Phoebe corrects him. He then says that he would love to be the catcher in the rye. Phoebe corrects him saying that the actual line is if a body meet a body coming through the rye.
Chapter 23
Holden calls Mr. Antonlini and gets invited to stay there. He smokes in Phoebe's room, and the parents arrive home. They smelled the smoke and Phoebe said she tried one puff. Holden gets loaned some of Phoebe's Christmas money and the leaves to Mr. Antonlini's.
Chapter 24
Holden and Mr. Antonlini talked about his expulsion. Mr. Antonlini is worried about Holden. They go to sleep and Holden walks up to Mr. Antonlini stroking his head. This freaks Holden out and he hurriedly leaves, using the excuse that he left his stuff at the train station. I think that Holden overreacted, and that Mr. Antonline was just being fatherly to Holden, and was concerned for his future.
Chapter 25
Holden spends the night on a bench and the next day he walks around the city. He keeps claiming that he feels like he is going to disappear. He continuously prays to Allie, Even though he is Atheist. He comes up with a weird fantasy about marrying a deaf-mute girl. He visits his old school and writes Phoebe a note saying to meet him at the museum. Phoebe arrives with a suitcase and states that she wants to go wherever Holden goes. Holden gets angry and tells her to shut up. They go to the zoo and Phoebe rides the carousel. He feels happy watching Phoebe ride the carousel because he knows how happy it makes her.
Chapter 26
Holden goes home and plans to attend school in the fall where he hopes to apply himself. He says he can't say he will because he doesn't know what he's going to do in the future.
