Catcher in the Rye chapters 5-13

Chapter 5

Holden is a complainer. We learned that his brother Allie died from Leukemia.

Chapter 6

Holden was so worried about Jane that he sat up all night looking out a window. At the beginning of the book Holden said he hates it when people repeat things, yet he repeats just about everything he says. Holden and Stradlater get into a fist fight over Jane.

Chapter 7

Holden hates Ackley, but they seem to be friends because they went to a movie and dinner together, and when Holden got into the fight with Stradlater, he went straight to Ackley's room. He makes big decisions without putting much thought into them, which is a major sign of immaturity. He decides to leave school, without sleeping on his thoughts about it. He packed his things and left, yelling moron through the hallway. He gives me the impression that he doesn't think too much of himself and he puts others before his own self. His mother sent him skates for Christmas and he doesn't want he stressing over him leaving, yet he doesn't realize that it's not just his mother's stress he should be worrying about. His whole eduacation and future are in major jeopardy.

chapter 8

Holden meets an older women on the train. He tells her this rediculous lie about her son being popular. He gave her a fake name, and said he was leaving Pencey early because he was getting a brain operation.

Chapter 9

Holden is obsessed with where the ducks go because he asks the taxi driver about it also. I found it slighly creepy that he was watching people through their open windows. He noticed a cross-dresser, and a couple spitting their drinks on each other. Holden got turned on by watching the couple. He calls a prostitute to keep him company for the night, but he is rejected.

Chapter 10

We learn about Phoebe in this chapter. She is really smart, and enjoys writing. Holden also encloses that she seems to always understand him. Holden says that he can get alcholic beverages because of his height and gray hair, but at this bar they refuse to sell him it. He meets three older women. They blow him off and show absolutely no interest in him, yet Holden still buys their drinks for them.

Chapter 11

We learn more about Jane Gallagher. They were close two summers ago. She was the only one he ever showed Allie's baseball mit. Holden said holding her hand made him really happy. He goes out again beacuse he still isn't tired.

Chapter 12

Holden goes to a nightclub, and asks once again about the ducks. This time he gets served alcohol. He meets one of his brother's old girlfriend and finds her extremely annoying. He leaves because of her and seems to get even more depressed.

Chapter 13

Holden gets home and gets offered a prostitute for $5. He said he felt lonely and he accepted. Holden refused to have sex with the women, but still paid her. He uses the excuse that he just had an operation. The women is very unsatisfied with her because he paid her $5 and the price is $10. Holden refuses to pay her that money because he was told $5.
