the road in Grapes of Wrath

In the Grapes of Wrath the road stands to be a symbol. The family spend a lot of time traveling on the highway and many deaths happen along the way. On a road you can move forwards or backwards. By the Joads moving forward they are going to an unknown land where they hope to be prosperous. By moving back, the Joads could stay in their homeland and know that there was no hope. They would have each other either way. The road stands to be a symbol of life and moving forward. In life, you can have regrets and you can dwell on the past and know what happens or you can look to the future and have hope. I think this is the main symbol of this book,
