Ruthie
Ruthie is the youngest sister. She is the sister of Winfield, but they seem to act more like best friends. They constantly talk to each other and joke around and play. They are good for each other in this time because they help each other through and they keep each other entertained. Ruthie also spoiled that Tom killed another man and the whole family has to take action to make sure Tom does not get caught. This is what causes Tom to go into hiding in the woods.
Grandpa
Grandpa is very set in his ways. He does things traditionally. He loves his grandchildren. He is very mean to his wife though. They seem to be mean to each other. He is very excited for California. However, the morning when the family decides to leave, grandpa refuses to go on. The family has to drug him to get him to come. On the road shortly after they leave grandpa dies and they bury him illegally.
