Holden Caulfield
Holden is the protagonist of this story. He attends Pencey Prep, and is about to get kicked out for the third or fourth time from school. He is the main character, and the readers experience his life, as he chooses to tell it, in detail. Holden is a young, confused, cynical, and inexperienced teenager. This books tells bits and pieces of his life before the novel begins, and go on to an in-depth tale of his search for something to do. He is a depressed teen, who seems to lack any kind of guidance. He does not take anything seriously and refuses to accept the fact that everyone grows up.
Ackley
Ackley is a strange kid, who is a school-mate of H0lden's. He has little to no friends, and it seems that everyone views him as the freak of the dorm. Holden, who insists he is not friends with Ackley, reaches out to his several times at the beginning of the novel. Ackley is a huge slob, and has very poor personal hygiene habits.
Stradlater
Stradlater is the jock of the dorm. He is popular and well liked. He is Holden's true roomate, and is a "secret slob". Stradlater is self-centered, and is very into himself. He goes on a date with Holden's old friend Jane Gallagher. Holden gets very jealous and Stradlater gets into an argument with Holden.
Jane Gallagher
We never actually meet Jane Gallagher in this story, but we hear quite a bit about her. She was Holdens friend a few summers before, and they got very close. She was the only true friend of Holden's, and Holden claims that Jane made him truly happy.
