Chapter 26
In this chapter the family moves camp. They need work and there isn't any to be done around the government camp that they are staying at. They move north and thy see a bunch of cops on the road and they ask the joads if they want to work as peach pickers. They agree and get a small house to stay in while they work. The men immediately set out because each box is worth 5 cents. At the end they made one dollar. Ma goes to the store which is very expensive and they don't get much food for their money. Tom go exploring and runs into Casy the preacher. Casy was leading the strike and some men find them and bash in casy's head. Tom reacts by hitting the man that killed casy. He got hit in the face and runs and hides. He has to stay in hiding because they are looking for him. Winfield gets sick from using the bathroom all day. They decide to leave the camp because people are looking for Tom and wages went down to two and a half cents a box. They hide Tom in between the mattresses and leave. On their way north they see a sign for cotton pickers and decides to do that for work. They camp out.
